The Swiss Family Robinson

The Swiss Family Robinson - Johann David Wyss, Scott McKowen, Arthur Pober More appropriate title suggestion: SHOOT TO KILL! A less catchy but even more precise title would be We Killed a Lot of Animals: The Story of a Family Stranded on an Island, Who Were Never in Serious Danger and Who - I Believe It Has Been Mentioned, Yet Bears Repeating - Killed a Lot of Animals. The way they hauled off and shot at the slightest movement in the bushes was nearly worse than the drunken yahoos I've known who seemed to be purposefully trying to give hunters a bad name.

Infinite supplies of gunpowder, a murderous contempt for all non-human life upon the island and a ton of other nonsense aside, The Swiss Family Robinson is a family adventure story whose time has surely passed. Oh sure, I recall enjoying the old movie version. That was entertaining, but so much of this book just flat out isn't. I can't imagine the child young enough to stomach this bunk and yet still have the mature patience to stick with the lulls in the action. I mean, even I can't believe I was a silly enough sod to stick around to the very end!

Good grief, this book, I tell ya. I am learning not to like titles with the name Robinson in them... http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/38428116

PS: Did anyone else catch the line when the dad said that they'd sailed all the way from Switzerland? Must've been one of those amphibious boats.
